Do Electric Cars Need Special Tires?
Electric cars do not always require a tire that is exclusively labelled as an “EV tire,” but their tires must be capable of handling the vehicle's specific load, torque, efficiency, grip and noise requirements. EV-ready tires are engineered to address these characteristics while meeting the size, load index and speed rating specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
Why are EV tire requirements different?
Electric vehicles can place different demands on tires compared with conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
The battery pack can contribute to higher vehicle weight, while electric motors can deliver torque rapidly. At the same time, driving range makes energy efficiency particularly important, and the quieter electric powertrain can make tire and road noise more noticeable.
For this reason, tires fitted to an EV may need to balance several characteristics:
- Load capacity – to support the vehicle's weight.
- Torque management – to maintain traction and manage wear under EV acceleration.
- Low rolling resistance – to minimise energy losses that can affect driving efficiency.
- Wet and dry grip – for braking, handling and vehicle control.
- Durability – to manage the combined effects of weight, torque and driving conditions.
- Low noise – to support the quieter character of an EV cabin.
Giti Engineering Insight
Giti's approach is not simply to create a tire and label it for electric vehicles. Its AdvanZtech EV Ready strategy develops tires capable of meeting the requirements of different powertrains, including ICE, mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles. Giti identifies low rolling resistance, grip, noise and comfort among the important considerations in this development process.
This approach is reflected in Giti's OE programmes with electric vehicle manufacturers.
For example, GitiSynergy H2 is an original-equipment tire for the Volkswagen ID. Buzz, representing Giti's first European EV OE fitment. Giti's current global OEM information also identifies EV OE programmes involving BMW and BYD.
Key Takeaway
EVs do not necessarily need an EV-exclusive tire, but they need tires engineered and correctly specified for their particular load, torque, efficiency, safety and comfort requirements.
